I am a big time Harry Potter nerd. I have read all the books several times, seen the movies, been sorted on Pottermore- the whole Rowling shebang. It’s about time that I did a little Harry Potter themed crafting! There are some amazing Harry Potter themed Christmas trees you can find on the internet, so I went in a slightly different direction. This is a Christmas tree inspired by the Hogwarts Owlery!
In case you’re not quite as fanatic as I am about Harry Potter, let me explain. Since all post is delivered by owls in the magical world, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardy has an owlery where the school’s and students’ owls can roost when they’re not delivering mail. Think of the owlery as a kind of aviary. In the books, it’s described as being on one of the top most floors of a tower. Because it’s open air, it’s rather chilly. The owls nestle about in all of the nooks and crannies of the room. They come and go as they please or when they’re needed to deliver mail.
I love the multitude of incredibly specific and well-described rooms at Hogwarts. This owlery is only one of what I hope will be several Hogwarts themed Christmas trees! This is such an easy tree to replicate, and I’ll share all of my sources with you!
Obviously, you cannot have a Hogwarts Owlery Themed Christmas tree without owls! Right now owls are in, so finding a multitude of owl ornaments won’t be a problem- even if you’re looking for some out of season.
Instead of going with a parliament of different owls, which I thought might look confusing, I bought several packages of these small, glass owl ornaments from Target. They look adorable. And there’s enough variation in color to keep the tree from looking uniform and boring.
Once I put them on the flocked Christmas tree, they looked so stinkin’ cute! Plus, they have a little glitter on them, which you know I love!
Even though there wouldn’t (I hope) be any mail still in the owlery, I liked the idea of putting items the owls would deliver on the tree. It ties them in with the theme and fills the tree out quite a bit.
This is the easiest and cheapest part of decorating your Hogwarts Owlery Themed Christmas tree! I love paper ornaments just for those reasons!
All you have to do is print them, cut them out, and fold them in to whatever shape they call for. Some of the letters that had details on the front and back I printed two of so that I could feature both sides.
You can play with the scale here, but if your owls are smaller (like mine) I recommend shrinking everything to some degree. You don’t have to worry about making the ratio between owl and mail size perfect, but something close will help the overall look of your tree.
The Tree Topper
I did need to add a tree topper that explains exactly what this tree is. Again, I kept it simple. First, I tea stained a white poster board and cut it out in a banner shape. After that I used a black sharpie to write “The Owlery” and drawn some boot prints on the banner. All my Harry Potter fans will know that this resembles the Marauder’s Map! It let’s everyone know what the theme is while still being decorative!
Isn’t this tree magical?! My husband and I went to Harry Potter World at Universal Studios last September, and this could easily be a holiday decoration there!
If you’re a Harry Potter fan I want to see your Potter-inspired decorations! Whether it’s for Christmas or a party, I would love to see your ideas and maybe even feature them on the blog! House points for the cleverest decorations!
And here’s my Hogwarts Owlery Themed Christmas Tree in it’s entirety!
