If you’re like me and my husband, you’ve fallen into something of a dating rut. We have our go to places and our same old plans, so taking the time to think of some new and exciting winter date ideas was so fun! Winter seems like an especially difficult time to plan a romantic evening. There’s the early sunset, the cold, and the chaos of the holidays. These 15 delightful December date nights embrace all those things and make them part of the magic of your evening. Happy holiday romancing!
1. Build an indoor fort for two.
Forts were a mandatory activity as a kid, and who knows why we stop building them as adults. See if your skills are as good as you remember. Put on a little music and get to building a romantic fort for just the two of you. Bonus points if you can add a mattress and spend the night in your fort.
2. Go ice skating.
Now, I live in a climate that doesn’t ever get cold enough to freeze a lake, but even we have access to an ice skating rink. Check around for hockey rinks or seasonal ones. If you give them a call before you go, an employee can usually let you know what times are the least crowded.
3. Sit in front of a cozy fire.
This is the perfect, budget friendly winter date night, but you have to have rules. No TV, no phones, just you two. You can talk, listen to music, or just snuggle together in the quiet warmth of a crackling fire.
4. Take a cooking class.
Cooking classes are fun, educational, and mean you have one less meal to figure out that week. Plus, there’s almost always wine.
5. Root for a local team.
Find a high school or small college team to go root for! Bundle up in your warmest clothes, sit on a bleacher with your love, and yell for the home team. You’ll feel like a teenager again, and we won’t judge if you want to go make out under the bleachers. In fact, we encourage it.
6. Go out for cocktails.
Throw off the usual date night and do it up big. Put on your fancy digs and new shoes and go get cocktails at the fanciest bar around town.
7. Watch a holiday parade.
Nothing will make your relationship feel part of a larger community than going to watch the town’s holiday parade. Hold hands as you snack on food truck dishes and wave at the Shriners on their scooters.
8. Put together a puzzle.
My husband and I love Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally. During an interview they mentioned they love to sit together and do puzzles while they listen to podcasts. Give their date night a try, and I think you’ll love it!
9. Make art (even if it’s ugly).
Always wanted to build a table? Make a sign? Paint a picture? Try it together. Whether you go to a paid class or just want to figure it out on your own, you can’t go wrong. Who knows, you might find out you’re the next home decor power couple.
10. Take off for a “snow day.”
The holidays are one of the busiest times of the year, and your obligations to family, parties, and activities can take up a lot of your best date nights. So if you’ve got an extra vacation day lying around, take off for a personal “snow day” together.
11. Volunteer together.
Giving back helps your fellow humans and animals, and it will help you remember the bigger picture.
12. Build a backyard bonfire.
If my husband could, he would do this every day- whether it was with me or not. Build up a big fire (safely) and toast some marshmallows, hot dogs, or kebabs.
13. Trim the tree.
Instead of trying to get this done as fast as you can, take an evening to do it together. Just imagine you’re in one of those old Christmas movies. Get dressed up just a little and trim the tree together.
14. Host a caroling party.
It’s a group date night party! Have your friends over and walk to your neighbors to go caroling. When you’ve had all the cold you can take, have everyone back to your place for hot cocoa and cookies.
15. Book a couple’s massage.
Duh, this one’s always romantic! And those heated massage beds feel so toasty in December!
